A five-member team that created an online service to help native Chinese speakers to learn spoken English won the top prize in the University at Buffalo’s annual technology-themed entrepreneurial competition.

The first-place team, with a venture called Welanguage, won a $25,000 prize package in the Henry A. Panasci Jr. Technology Entrepreneurship Competition. The service uses Internet videoconferencing to connect tutors here with people in China who want to build their spoken English skills.

Many in China learn written English at an early age but lack opportunities to practice speaking it with other English speakers, said Weibo Si, one of the winning team’s members. “This is not just my case. There are millions of people with the same experience.”

The service is already operating, he said, and is planning to hire additional tutors.

The other four members of the first-place team are: Beili Han of Amherst, Chen Chen of Amherst, Benjamin Smith of Syracuse, Lei Shi of North Tonawanda. The prize package includes seed funding as well as legal services from Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel, accounting services from Bechtel, Kopin & Co. and office space from North Forest Office Providers.

Second place in the competition went to a team that presented an idea called TeraSpecter, which would make and market portable chemical detection systems for security and screening in airports, border crossings and government buildings. The team won $10,000 in start-up funding.

Sixteen teams entered this year’s Panasci competition. The field was narrowed to five finalists who presented their business plans on Monday to a six-judge panel.
